Magnetic exchange and quantum confinement in the ferromagnetic oxide EuO
The monoxide of Europium (EuO) belongs to the rare class of ferromagnetic insulators fueling current research in the fields of fundamental magnetism and spintronics. Characteristic magneto-optical and magneto-transport phenomena - such as spin-filter tunneling, metal-insulator transition (MIT) or the red-shift of the optical absorption edge - rely on a strong exchange splitting below the magnetic phase transition. In my talk, I will cover aspects of the EuO materials science providing the backbone for studying single-crystalline surfaces and oxide heterostructures. Moreover, we discuss novel insights into the magnetic exchange correlations imprinted in the electronic structure and spin-transport properties of EuO through the magnetic phase transition - in the bulk and confined electronic systems.
