Welcome

Here in the EPQM group we study the fascinating world of emergent phenomena in solids: behaviours that arise unexpectedly due to coupling between different fundamental degrees of freedom. We are particularly interested in the interplay between the crystal lattice and the electronic structure in stabilising novel behaviour, and how these effects vary at the micro-scale.

To investigate these effects we combine cutting-edge probes of the electronic structure such as time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (trARPES) with advanced methods for manipulating the lattice, namely strain and moiré engineering. With the insights obtained from these powerful methods, we aim to unravel the microscopic mechanisms at play in a variety of quantum materials, and obtain control over their electronic behaviour.
